A new high-speed camera has been installed at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre (SOPAC), operating at 100 frames per second (fps) and delivering timing accuracy down to 0.01s intervals. This updated technology, having been tested at Swimming NSW (SNSW) winter events, means SNSW has confirmed it will now validate records timed by Olly Timing at SOPAC. With the new camera in place, Olly Timing unequivocally meets the requirements of both World Aquatics Competition Regulations and World Para Swimming Rules and Regulations, enabling world records to be validated.

Emma is currently a Professor at RMIT University and has been a driving force within SMAANZ, from her early days as a student representative on the Board through to key leadership roles, conference organisation, HDR workshops, and mentoring. She has also been instrumental in shaping sport management scholarship more broadly, with internationally recognised research in sport for development and gender equality in sport, and through her leadership in research groups such as the La Trobe Centre for Sport and Social Impact and the Swinburne Sport Innovation Research Group.

New QUT analytics tool measures return to play injury risk

Queensland University of Technology researchers have created a powerful new tool that could predict when an athlete is at risk of suffering another injury when returning to play from a previous injury. It uses data from wearable sensors capturing how the athlete moves in training or gameplay, along with data about the preceding injury and contextual information to quantify the risk. The system was developed by Associate Professor Paul Wu, Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen and Yu Yi Yu from the QUT School of Mathematical Sciences and Centre for Data Science, alongside an interdisciplinary team comprising performance health researchers from the Australian Institute of Sport, statisticians from UNSW and informed potential users. Their hope is that it could help coaches, medical staff and athletes spot danger signs early, avoid costly injuries and keep players performing at their peak.
