The ASTN Gold Coast Sportstech Uncovered event that took place on Tuesday 11 June 2024, successfully highlighted the vast potential and diverse applications of sports technology in enhancing performance, increasing accessibility, and driving innovation. The launch of the
Sportstech Gold Coast Growth Plan, in partnership with the City of Gold Coast, marks a significant step towards establishing the region as a premier destination for sports tech. The insights shared by Lydia O’Donnell, Dr David Martin, and Dr Martin Schlegel underscore the importance of collaboration, customer-centric problem-solving, and ethical considerations in developing effective sports tech solutions. As the Growth Plan unfolds, the commitment of ASTN and the City of Gold Coast to fostering sustainable growth and innovation will undoubtedly pave the way for a brighter future in sports technology, benefiting athletes, coaches, and communities alike.

On 5 September, the Senate Inquiry into concussions and repeated head trauma in contact sports handed down its much-anticipated report. In the report, the Committee highlights the inadequacy of insurance arrangements for athletes and encourages state and territory governments to engage with professional sporting organisations to explore how the general exclusion of professional sports people from various state and territory workers’ compensation schemes could be removed. In this webinar, Dr Eric Windholz from Monash University will examine current insurance arrangements for athletes, the exemption from workers’ compensation of professional sportspersons, and options for reform considering the Senate Inquiry's recommendations.
