2025 smartcities & sport summit

Smart Cities & Sport connect sports cities, international sports federations and partners to reflect on the future of cities through the lens of sport. Established in 2014, smartcities & sport is an initiative that originates from the World Union of Olympic Cities which gathers former and future Olympic Host Cities. It has since expanded to cities interested in using sport as a platform for growth and development.

Focusing on technology, in relation to sport and to cities, seems an obvious choice given this year’s destination. Seoul is a vibrant city, where “creativity” is a motto and “pali-pali” (meaning “hurry-hurry”) is a way of life. As one of the most connected and technologically innovative cities in the world, Seoul is a state-of-the-art smart city, successfully combining city dynamics with citizen participation.

Tech, AI, big data, IoT (Internet of Things), digitalisation, these words are everywhere today, including in the world of sports. While these terms are increasingly familiar, their meanings and applications can vary widely. Taking a step back to explore what they truly involve—and how these concepts shape our environments—opens the door to better understanding of their implications and potential limitations It’s time for an update, a refresh to level the playing field and to encourage rich and fruitful exchanges.

There could be no better place to organise a summit that will tackle the potential of technology to make cities smarter through sport.
