FrogBox: Taking community sport video to global scale

FrogBox builds video technology that enables community sport to capture, stream and share every match. Purpose-built equipment, cloud software, sports data integrations and artificial intelligence combine to automate video production and create a scalable platform that supports clubs, competitions, governing bodies and technology partners.
"Community sport creates millions of moments every year that deserve to be seen, shared and remembered," says Rob Knee, FrogBox's Chief Executive Officer. "Our mission is to build the digital video technology that helps every sporting organisation capture those moments, connect their communities and unlock new opportunities through technology."
Building on a foundation in community sport
FrogBox was founded by a team with deep expertise across sports technology, live sports data and community sport. Peter Macaulay, founder of InteractSport, brings more than 25 years' experience building technology for community sport, pioneering solutions spanning competition management, live scoring, analytics and video infrastructure used by sporting organisations across multiple countries. Rob Knee, Co-Founder and now CEO, has more than a decade of experience helping sporting organisations adopt and scale technology, including leadership roles at InteractSport, Sportradar and Tennis Australia. Sam Taylor, Co-Founder and founding CEO, brings senior international experience in sports strategy, having previously served as SVP Sports Strategy at Sportradar.
The team’s roots run deep in community cricket. Having built InteractSport into a community cricket scoring and data business used across multiple countries, the founders sold it to a global sports data company, Sportradar, in 2021. In late 2023, the founders acted on an opportunity to buy back the business, forming an independent company focused squarely on community sport. That move gave the team the freedom to build purpose-built technology including its own purpose-built camera, designed for community sport. The FrogBox Sports Camera was recently recognised with an Australian Good Design Award in the Product Design – Sport and Lifestyle category, recognising the design and engineering behind making high-quality sports video accessible in community environments.

After pioneering Australia's first web-based sports competition management system, and later introducing electronic live scoring to community cricket, the founders saw sports video streaming as the next logical evolution. The highly engaging nature of video had the potential to transform community sport, not just helping people watch matches, but strengthening connections between clubs, players, volunteers, families and supporters, and helping communities celebrate moments that would otherwise have been missed. From the beginning, the vision was broader than streaming: that the best technology for sport should create value for everyone involved, from the fan watching at home and the volunteer running match day, through to clubs, competitions, state associations and national governing bodies.
The technology gap in community sport
Community sport is one of the largest and most active participation sectors in the world, yet it has historically lacked the technology available to professional sport. While top-tier competitions and high-performance programs have invested heavily in video, data and digital engagement, most community sporting organisations still rely on volunteers and disconnected systems to manage thousands of matches every week.
At the same time, expectations have changed. Players, families and supporters increasingly expect to watch community sport matches remotely, access highlights, share memorable moments and engage with their sporting communities online. Clubs and competitions are looking for new ways to attract participants, recognise volunteers, engage sponsors and strengthen community connection, while governing bodies require scalable technology that can be deployed consistently across hundreds or thousands of clubs.
The challenge extends well beyond live streaming. Unlike professional sport, community sport operates in volunteer led environments where technology must be simple to deploy, reliable across diverse venues and weather conditions, and require minimal training or ongoing support, a fundamentally different approach to product design than professional broadcast technology demands.
Beyond the livestream
For FrogBox, video is the starting point.
Once a match is captured, data and AI can automatically create highlights and searchable content, while FrogBox makes it easier to manage and share video at scale, creating more value for fans, clubs and sponsors.
- Capture uses purpose-built camera equipment and mobile technology designed specifically for community sport, making it simple for volunteers to capture matches consistently and reliably.
- Structured Data draws on sports data integrations, metadata and AI to transform every match into structured digital content: searchable video, highlights and reusable media assets and content.
- Operations & Automation gives clubs, competitions and governing bodies cloud software to schedule, monitor and manage thousands of matches through a single platform, with automation that continually reduces manual effort for volunteers.
- Distribute publishes video through FrogBox Play, partner platforms and governing body channels, creating new opportunities for fan engagement, sponsorship, media and digital participation.
Numbers that tell the scale
FrogBox has built technology specifically for the realities of community sport, making it possible for volunteers to capture, stream and share games without a production crew or technical expertise. Today, that technology underpins partnerships with Cricket Australia, all eight Australian State and Territory Cricket Associations, the England and Wales Cricket Board, Cricket Scotland, the Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond and PlayHQ.
More than 10,000 clubs have been streamed using FrogBox, with over 2,000 sporting organisations actively streaming each week during their seasons. The technology now delivers around 40,000 live streams and 800,000 hours of footage annually, automatically generating 5.5 million highlights and capturing 40 million balls on video. Importantly for volunteer-run clubs, 85 per cent of streams are completed without customer support, while annual customer retention sits at 93 per cent.
That reach is also creating new ways for brands to invest in community sport. Amazon Prime partnered with FrogBox to fund 50 streaming kits for women’s community cricket clubs, helping more clubs capture and share their games and increasing visibility of the women’s game. FrogBox has generated an estimated 100 million sponsor impressions across its network.
Having proven the model in cricket, FrogBox is now taking its technology into new sports and markets. Volleyball WA became its first official partner outside cricket, with expansion into baseball and softball also underway. Internationally, FrogBox has expanded into New Zealand through partnerships with PlayHQ and New Zealand Cricket.
ASTN's role
The FrogBox leadership team had already been part of the ASTN community during their time with Sportradar, and were familiar with the strength of Victoria's sportstech ecosystem well before FrogBox existed as an independent business. Following FrogBox's establishment and with ambitions to expand into new sports and international markets, the leadership team chose to deepen its engagement with ASTN, recognising the value it provides through industry collaboration, market insights, access to expertise and opportunities to connect with partners, investors and government.
That engagement has included participation in ASTN's community through industry events, networking opportunities and knowledge-sharing initiatives, as well as ASTN-led trade and market development activity, including engagement with international trade partners such as Austrade, as FrogBox evaluated expansion into emerging regions. ASTN has also actively promoted FrogBox's milestones and innovations through its communication channels, and its networking activities have facilitated introductions to potential partners, sporting organisations and industry stakeholders, leading to new conversations and commercial opportunities that continue to support FrogBox's growth. One-on-one discussions and small roundtable sessions have also provided a valuable forum for FrogBox to share challenges, test ideas and learn from others in the ecosystem.
"Building a global technology company takes more than great products," Knee says. "It requires access to networks, expertise and opportunities. ASTN has helped connect FrogBox with the broader Victorian sportstech ecosystem, creating relationships that have supported our growth and reinforced Victoria's position as a global leader in sports innovation."
What's next
Building on its success in community cricket, FrogBox is focused on expanding the platform into more regions, more sports and more communities, with its focus over the coming years organised around three strategic areas. Platform capability means expanding sports data, mobile streaming, artificial intelligence, technology integrations and automation to continue reducing operational complexity while increasing the value created from every match. Media & Fan Engagement means helping sporting organisations unlock greater value from community sport through digital experiences, audience growth, owned media, sponsorship opportunities and new ways to engage participants and supporters. More sports, more markets means extending the proven FrogBox platform into additional sports, governing bodies and international markets, building on the infrastructure already established across cricket while adapting to the unique needs of new sporting communities.
As FrogBox grows, the company wants to continue building its technology capability in Victoria, drawing on the state's strong pipeline of engineering and product talent to create highly skilled local jobs that contribute to Victoria's sportstech ecosystem. Continued support for research and development, innovation programs and initiatives that help emerging technology companies recruit and retain local talent, combined with ASTN's ongoing support for industry collaboration, international market development and strategic partnerships, is something FrogBox sees as key to helping Victorian sportstech companies scale globally while continuing to invest locally.
